Effects of Carbohydrates Cholesterol – Is it good or bad?

If you want to lower your cholesterol levels, it is recommended that you eat more carbohydrates. However, not just anything containing carbohydrates will have the cholesterol lowering benefits that you are looking for. It is important to choose the right type of carbohydrates.

If you want to lower your cholesterol, you need to eat complex carbohydrates, including those found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. According to WebMD, the fiber in these foods will help to lower your bad cholesterol (1).

Besides, these are all very healthy foods to eat for other reasons as well as they are full of nutritional benefits. These types of foods should replace other foods that are less nutritionally sound or that have detrimental effects on cholesterol levels.

What should you do?

Try having a vegetarian meal made with beans or tofu and vegetables instead of a meat based meal from time to time, for example.

A recent study shows that simple sugars are best avoided if you want to achieve the cholesterol lowering benefits. The study found that your triglyceride and cholesterol levels will get higher the more sugar you consume. HDL ("good") cholesterol levels were also lower (2).

This means that you should try to avoid added sugar as much as possible, and stick to foods that are naturally sweet to get their sugar fix.

There was a study showing that honey can have beneficial effects with regards to cholesterol, so you might want to try switching from sugar to honey. (3)

However, even honey shouldn't be used in large amounts since it contains a lot of calories without a lot of nutritional benefit.

What should you do?

Stay away from sweets and overly processed foods if you want to keep your cholesterol levels low through eating more carbohydrates since these will be both higher in saturated fats and sugars, both of which raise carbs cholesterol.
