Cholesterol FAQ

What Are Normal LDL Levels?

To stay healthy and prevent heart problems, you must have normal LDL levels. LDL or low density lipoprotein is a type of lipoprotein that is normally found in your blood. Also termed as “bad cholesterol”, high LDL levels increase your chances to have heart problems, stroke, and even premature death.

Normal LDL Levels Depend On Each Individual

Normal LDL values may vary in different individuals. For example, for people without any history of heart disease, the optimum level of LDL is below 130 mg/dL. But if you have heart disease or you have a family history of heart disease, the values goes down well below 100 mg/dL.

The normal value of LDL values should be further low in individuals who are at very high risk of developing heart problems and who should have normal LDL levels below 70 mg/dL. So while reading your lipid profile report, you should not take your LDL values as such and you should consult your healthcare professional to determine what should be the normal LDL value for you.

Best Practice – Run A Blood Test Yearly To Determine Normal LDL Levels

Cholesterol levels are usually checked through a blood test called lipid panel. The lipid panel not only measures your total cholesterol, your HDL or “good” cholesterol but it also measures your LDL or “bad” cholesterol. It is important to check your cholesterol levels at least once a year because most people suffering from high cholesterol levels for years don’t even know about this. Some may get informed at a stage when high cholesterol has already done the damage. It is also important to know your normal LDL levels because high LDL cholesterol will not go away at its own unless you take action.

Cholesterol Normal LDL Levels

Once you have your lipid panel report in hand, you will see different values given along with normal ranges. The normal ranges are as follows:

for total cholesterol given is usually 135-200 mg/dl,
LDL or “bad” cholesterol is less than 130 mg/dL, recommended to be less than 100 mg/dl, and
HDL or “good cholesterol” is greater than 30 mg/dl.

Some people get confused that why HDL should be higher if cholesterol is bad for us? The fact is that not every type of cholesterol is bad for you. The HDL or “good cholesterol” is required to remove excess cholesterol from your body. If this excess cholesterol is not removed, it will turn your arteries narrow and block them. Therefore, it is always recommended that a person should have HDL or “good cholesterol” great than 30. On the other hand most recommend that normal LDL levels should be below 100 mg/dL.
