So what is LDL cholesterol? Well…LDL or low-density lipoprotein is a type of lipoprotein found in your blood. The LDL or low-density lipoprotein belongs to a group of 5 major lipoproteins including chylomicrons, intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). LDL cholesterol is also known as the “bad cholesterol” while HDL cholesterol is known as the “good cholesterol”. Low-density lipoprotein or LDL cholesterol is a major cholesterol carrier in the blood. If you are having too much LDL cholesterol circulating in your blood, it will slowly start building up in the walls of your arteries including those supplying your heart and brain. Overtime, LDL cholesterol in combination with other similar substances starts forming a hard plaque that starts depositing inside your arteries. Once a plaque is formed, there is always a chance of its breaking up from the wall of artery and turning into a clot blocking the artery and blood flow. Now, if such clots are formed inside the arteries supplying heart and brain, the person is at high risk of a heart attack or stroke respectively.
