Lipitor side effects on health.

Lipitor side effects "live":

"My husband is suffering from muscle wasting, …amnesia, muscle pain etc. His doctors agree that … (they) were caused by the 4 years he was on Lipitor.

Those are the side effects from lipitor as experienced by a patient.

While lipitor definitely lowers cholesterol, you should strongly consider and evaluate lipitor side effects before usage.

Statins (Lipitor belongs to statin group of drugs) have already killed over 50 people with rhabdomyolysis, and are affecting over 6,000 per year with nerve damage. However, they continue to be the most prescribed class of drugs, despite the above data including lipitor side effects.

Let's go through the words of someone who has seen her husband go through lipitor, and noticed a variety of side effects from lipitor.

My own husband, a 54 year old former corporate CEO, is now sufferingfrom short-term memory loss, deficits in cognition, polyneuropathy, massivemuscle wasting, aphasia, multiple episodes of amnesia, and chronic disablingmuscle and nerve pain. His current doctors agree that the conditions werecaused by the 4 years he was on Lipitor, and the extensive testing continues torule out other causes, but there are no studies to date on treatment orrecovery from this condition, which continues 7 months (so far) after haltingthe Lipitor. Unfortunately, his symptoms began to appear early on, but hisdoctor ignored the concerns raised by my husband and our entire family. Thedoctor continued to prescribe the Lipitor for over 2 years after the symptomsappeared, not only failing to associate the symptoms with the Lipitor, but alsofailing to look into any other cause. There are many others suffering the exactsame set of symptoms. These are former CEOs and professionals. At 6,000 peryear harmed, it will soon be very difficult to overlook this growingpopulation.

While there might be only "few" cases of lipitor side effects, why not have a look at the official website of lipitor (www.lipitor.com), and let's see from the manufacturer as to what are lipitor side effects.

Please take note that the words in inverted commas " ", are taken directly from lipitor website at www.lipitor.com/pi/default.asp.

The first of lipitor side effects, liver disfunction. According to the lipitor official website, lipitor side effects can be controlled by performing "liver function tests prior to and at 12 weeks following the initiation of therapy and any elevation of dose, and periodically (eg, semiannually) thereafter."

This is great for clinics and hospitals, as they are developing "secondary sources of income" by having you conduct regular liver tests. So, the doctor prescribes lipitor and together with it lipitor side effects, whereas Pfizer (the manufacturer) makes the money, but in return you'd have to conduct liver tests to check about lipitor side effects. That would provide additional revenue for the hospital.

The second of lipitor side effects is felt on the "skeletal muscle". The lipitor website specifically mentions about this kind of lipitor side effects that "rare cases of rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria have been reported".

Another "live" experience of lipitor side effects from a Lipitor user:

In November 2002, after 7 weeks of taking this medication (Lipitor), Ihad severe pain in both hands … I have had severe knee swelling and pain andcould not maneuver the stairs. Thank God that cleared up with a littlediscomfort left on one knee. My main problem is the pain and swelling in thehands, finger or fingers, and wrists going up into the forearms. … I don't haveany confidence in my GP … Where do I turn for help? I keep wondering if I willever have the use of my hands back to do all the normal things I always tookfor granted.

After reading what people have to say about lipitor side effects, you might want to refer back to what Pfizer says in the official website about lipitor side effects:

"Lipitor is generally well tolerated. The side effects associated with Lipitor are usually mild and tend to go away. The most common reported side effects are gas, constipation, stomach pain, and indigestion.

Lipitor has an excellent safety profile at all doses."

(Quoted from www.lipitor.com/member/takinglipitor.asp.)

God bless America, sorry I mean Pfizer. No comments on the above statements regarding side effects from lipitor. I wonder what Pfizer officials would say about the phrase "Lipitor has an excellent safety profile at all doses", when they see what people are saying about lipitor side effects.

Other lipitor side effects affect the digestive, respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal systems, as well as skin and appendages.

Further, there are lipitor side effects on urogenital system, cardiovascular system, metabolic and nutritional disorders, hemic and lymphatic system, too many to write it here.

But you get the picture I believe, as to what are the real lipitor side effects.

At the same time, despite lipitor side effects, probably lipitor is a drug that you might need to lower cholesterol. If you don't lower your cholesterol it increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

It is a known fact that cholesterol build up in the arteries will result in the blockage of arteries, which ultimately leads to heart attack or stroke.

Having in view lipitor side effects you may be weighing advantages and disadvantages of using lipitor. What you might want to know however, is that there other alternatives to lipitor and other cholesterol lowering drugs, without lipitor side effects. If something else can do the same job as lipitor, but without side effects from lipitor you'd be glad to use it.

One of the most successful substances that lowers cholesterol is policosanol (of course without lipitor side effects), which is a safe and natural extract from sugar cane wax. It works by helping the liver control its production and breakdown of cholesterol.

Clinical studies show that policosanol is as effective as prescription drugs in lowering cholesterol, but without their dangerous side effects such as lipitor side effects.

For example, in a study of 53 diabetic patients, policosanol lowered total cholesterol by 14.2 percent, LDL (bad) cholesterol 20.4 percent and even raised the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol by 7.5 percent.

Plus, specific clinical trials have been safely performed with elderly persons, diabetics, as well as individuals with liver damage or high blood pressure. The results have been without any side effects, unlike lipitor side effects.

And this is much more cheaper than any cholesterol lowering drugs. It costs cheaper than US$ 30. Compare that to any other cholesterol drugs that range around US$ 100. See the table below for cholesterol lowering drugs prices. As you see below, not only you get charged almost 100 bucks for lipitor, it seems you are buying together with it, lipitor side effects.

Lipitor (30 - 20 mg. tablets)

$98.40

Lopid (60 - 600 mg. tablets)
