Important Zocor Medication Facts

Zocor medication is very effective to lower cholesterol when used according to a doctor’s recommendations.

Zocor Medication Purpose

Zocor used only with a prescription by a doctor is the brand name for Simvastatin. It is designed to inhibit the amount of cholesterol the liver can produce in the body and raise “good” cholesterol (HDL) in the blood.

Reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol or “bad “cholesterol using a statin drug such as Zocor is important but must be combined with a healthy eating and exercise plan to promote good health and lower the risk of a heart attack.

When Zocor Medication should not be taken?

Not everyone with high cholesterol should take Zocor. Medication classified as a statin cannot be taken by women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant because this drug is thought to cause birth defects. Patients already taking certain medications such as Ketoconazole, Cyclosporin or Coumadin cannot take Zocor.

People with kidney problems, history of seizures, recent major surgery or an organ transplant, endocrine disease, liver problems, low blood pressure, diabetes, underactive thyroid or any type of muscular disorder should consider another course of treatment.

Zocor and Alcohol

You must be careful about drinking alcohol when prescribed Zocor medication because any consumption can increase triglyceride levels in the blood and endanger kidney function.

Zocor and Grapefruit

Grapefruit (both juice and whole fruit) is also not recommended because it can dangerously increase the level of certain medications in the bloodstream.

Zocor Side Effects

When taking Zocor medication for lowering cholesterol it is important to be informed about the possible side effects and warnings associated with the drug. There are several serious side effects that are possible; however, the impact of elevated cholesterol on the body is often more dangerous. You should follow the suggested dosage, inform your doctor of existing conditions or prescriptions, and get tested at least quarterly to track if the drug is working.

Some possible minor side effects of Zocor medication can include heartburn, rash, diarrhea, nausea, and headache. However, it is important to contact a doctor immediately if experiencing muscle pain or muscle weakness, signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling eyes), severe skin reaction such as blistering, fever, and dark urine or yellowing eyes which can indicate liver or kidney damage.

You must report to your doctor any symptom that makes you uncomfortable while taking a drug.
